Paul Martin Hyman

December 16, 1946 — February 12, 2021

AIKEN, SC – Paul Martin Hyman, age 74, entered into the presence of Jesus Christ on February 12, 2021 at 9:04 PM after a brief battle with COVID-19.  Paul was born on December 16, 1946 in Richmond, Virginia. He is survived by his wife and soul-mate of 52 years, Mary Eckardt Hyman; two sons, Phillip Steele Hyman of Aiken and Bradford Durham Hyman (Lauren) of Graniteville; three grandsons, Coy Andrew Smith, Blake Paul Hyman and Logan Wallace Hyman; and two brothers, William Durham Hyman (Patti) of Toney, Alabama and David Vernon Hyman (Denise) of Aiken. He was the son of the late Louise Westermann Hyman and Durham Steele Hyman of Aiken.

Paul moved with his parents and brothers to Aiken in 1952, when his father was transferred by DuPont. He attended Millbrook Elementary School, Kennedy Middle School, and graduated from Aiken High School in 1965. Paul served his country during the Vietnam War as a Specialist 2nd Class (E-5) in the U.S. Army, before coming home to graduate from Wofford College in 1973. Paul was selected as an All-American Collegiate Golfer, and he was a member of the Wofford Golf Team which won the NAIA National College Golf Championship in 1973.

Paul’s professional career included outside sales for an aluminum company and Senior Financial Analyst for Westinghouse Savannah River Company (WSRC) at the Savannah River Site. He retired on his birthday in 2010 to pursue his hobbies of frequent rounds of golf at Aiken Golf Club, leisure fishing, relaxing at Fripp Island with his wife, sons, and grandsons (who lovingly called him Granddaddy), reading, and watching movies. He also bonded with his brothers and life-long friends on annual trips to Alabama, Lake Murray, and Edisto Island.

A devout Christ follower, Paul and Mary were active in various local churches throughout their lives including First Baptist Spartanburg, Millbrook Baptist Church, Cedar Creek Church, and NewSpring Church.  Paul and Mary are currently members of NewSpring Church, Aiken Campus, where they attended regularly with their son Brad and his family.

A Celebration-of-Life service will take place at a later date when the Hyman family feels it is safe for everyone to attend. Those interested in attending the event please indicate so on the Shellhouse Funeral Home website guestbook (https://www.shellhousefuneralhome.com) and you will be contacted when the date and venue are decided.
