Maureen Carpenter Brown

MODOC, SC - Mrs. Ferdie Maureen Carpenter Brown, 89, of Modoc, SC, and formerly of Aiken, SC, died peacefully on April 25, 2010, at Sunrise Assisted Living Facility in Fairfax, VA. Her husband of 60 years, Richard Atticus Brown, died in 2006. Mrs. Brown is survived by her daughter Linda Cheryl “Sherry” Browett and her husband Richard L. Browett of Fairfax, VA; her granddaughter Alyson M. Browett and her husband John P. Ralph of Purcellville, VA; her grandson Michael S. Browett and his wife Kristy Browett of Sparks, NV; two nieces, Gloria Fleming Sierra of Benton, KY, and Patti Carpenter of Commerce, CO; and two nephews, William Fleming and John Fleming of Benton, KY. Mrs. Brown was born in Trigg County, KY, the youngest daughter of Ferdinand and Iva Hollowell Carpenter. During World War II, Mrs. Brown served in the Navy WAVES, and she retired in 1985 from the J.M. Huber Corporation in Langley, SC, after 26 years of employment. Mrs. Brown was passionate about genealogical research and belonged to numerous organizations relating to history and heritage, including the American Legion, the Colonial Dames XVII Century (Henry Tyler Chapter), the Order of the Eastern Star (Queen City Chapter 141), Daughters of the American Revolution (Trenton Chapter), and the Society of Mareen Duvall Descendants. Along with her husband, Richard, she was a good friend and neighbor, always willing to lend a helping hand, and she enjoyed spending time with fellow members of the Modoc Baptist Church, Modoc Shores Association and the “M” Club. Her family members and many friends remember her as a pillar of strength and motivation. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 5, 2010 in the Shellhouse Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverend Robert Patton officiating. Interment with US Navy honors will follow in Bethany Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice or Capital Hospice online at capitalhospice.org or by mail at Capital Hospice, Attn: Philanthropy Office, 2900 Telestar Court, Falls Church, VA, 22042. The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Tuesday at Shellhouse Funeral Home, 924 Hayne Avenue, Aiken, SC, 29801.
