William Ward Sartoris

William “Bill” Ward Sartoris, 87, passed away on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, after a brave battle with pancreatic cancer.

Bill was born in Jackson, Mississippi, son of the late Wilson Ward Sartoris and Eva West Sartoris. A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point where Duty, Honor, Country, and service to others are learned and lived. He completed Infantry Airborne and Ranger training and was assigned to the 325 Airborne Battle Group of the 82nd Airborne Division. He left active duty to pursue basic training at the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA, and continued to serve his country as a Special Agent for the FBI, taking assignments first in Cleveland, OH and then in Philadelphia, PA. He later earned his graduate degree from Temple University and spent the remainder of his professional life as a professor of English at Camden County College in Blackwood, New Jersey. He enjoyed retirement, hosting family and friends on the coast of Maine for over 23 years, and wintering in Aiken over the past 16.

He was a beloved husband to his true love and wife of over 65 years, Joan Patricia Sartoris, to whom he proposed after only 3 weeks - “When you know, you know!” He was also the cherished father of three daughters, a beloved grandfather to six grandchildren, and a highly amused great-grandfather to three. He was deeply devoted to those he loved and known for being kind, sweet, caring, supportive, and always there when his family needed him. His love was steady and unconditional, and his presence brought comfort, warmth, humor, and reassurance to generations of his family.

Bill valued his longtime friendship with his West Point roommate and Ranger buddy, Ambrose Brennan. Together, they would reminisce about the old days, discuss and debate current issues, and develop solutions to the world’s problems, always with great enthusiasm.

Bill had a curious and cultured mind and was a prolific reader of literature, poetry, and religion. He continued learning Latin and foreign languages, history, culture, public policy, and philosophy. He enjoyed traveling through Italy and hiking solo through France which allowed him to draw upon his knowledge, talent, and ear for languages. He had a deep appreciation for classical music. He enjoyed the simple pleasures, too: a good glass of red wine, al dente pasta, and homemade apple pie.

His Catholic faith shaped every part of his life. He lived that faith not only in prayer and devotion, but in the way he treated others—with compassion, generosity, humility, and love. He was a man of deep integrity and character: thoughtful, principled, articulate, selfless, introspective, respectful, and always a gentleman. His rich baritone voice remains unforgettable. The quiet strength of his kindness, honesty, devotion, and gentle spirit will continue to live on in all who knew and loved him.

Requiem aeternam dona ei, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat ei. Requiescat in pace.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace.

Bill is survived by his beloved wife, Joan, daughters Jeanne-Marie Kita (Charles), Jacqueline Sartoris, Jennifer Sartoris (Brad); grandchildren Catherine (Steven), Michael (Victoria), Hayden, Kristen (Christian), Josephine, Luke; great-grandchildren Charlotte, Eloise, and Henry; and his sister Brenda Sartoris (Roger) and sister-in-law Paula Jordanek. He is preceded in death by his brother Joel.

The funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, September 17, 2026, at Old St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church with the Very Reverend Richard Wilson officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
