Wallace McNair Dunbar

KITCHINGS MILL, SC - Wallace M. Dunbar, 78, of Aiken, South Carolina, passed away on June 30, 2026.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Mary Kay Dunbar; his sons, John W. Dunbar (Destiny) and Wallace M. Dunbar Jr.; his sister, Ann Mayenschein; his nieces and nephews, Amy and Will Parrott, Elizabeth Duffy, Wayne Frederick (Sabrina), Wendy Sherman, and Caroline Peek; and his great-niece and great-nephew, Elaina Parrott and William Parrott.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William J. Dunbar and Ann McNair Dunbar; his sister, Virginia D. Frederick; and his brother, William J. Dunbar Jr.

Wallace graduated from Aiken High School in 1965, where he was a member of the football team. After graduation, he dedicated his life to farming on his family's farm, Burkelo Plantation, in Kitchings Mill, South Carolina. He was known for his unwavering commitment to preserving the land and the wildlife that flourished there. Wallace quietly gave back to those in need, whether by sharing a meal, offering a job, or taking the time to provide thoughtful advice. Countless people benefited from his generosity, even when he never sought recognition for it.

Wallace was a member of the Aiken County Shriners Club, where he dedicated many years to serving his community. When he wasn't working the fields in Kitchings Mill, he found peace at his home in Cedar Mountain, North Carolina. He was a devoted member of Rocky Hill Baptist Church, where he became well known for preparing barbecue and fish fries that brought family, friends, and neighbors together.

An avid hunter and outdoorsman, Wallace's commitment to conservation was evident in the care he gave his land and the many species of birds, deer, and fish that continue to thrive there. His annual dove hunt became the backdrop for generations of cherished memories, friendships, and stories that will be told for years to come. He passed along his love of nature, hunting, and respect for the outdoors not only to his sons but also to many young people whose lives he influenced.

Throughout his life, Wallace was known by many names—Wallace, Mr. Dunbar, Boss, Dad, Cotton, and Wawa. No matter what you called him, if you spent time with Wallace, you walked away knowing more than when you arrived, whether you learned a hard lesson, a life lesson, or simply how to clean a fish. Wallace never sought praise for the difference he made in the lives of others, and he may never have realized just how far his influence reached. His quiet compassion, unwavering work ethic, generosity, and love for his family, friends, and the outdoors will continue to live on through the countless people whose lives he touched.

The family will receive friends during a visitation on Thursday, July 16, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Shellhouse Funeral Home on Hayne Avenue in Aiken, South Carolina.
