Thomas Hayes “Tommy” Coward, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and steadfast member of his community, passed away peacefully on July 30, 2026, in his home in Aiken, surrounded by his loving family. Born on November 15, 1942, in Hillsborough County, Florida, Tommy’s life was characterized by enduring commitment to family, agriculture, and service to his community.

Tommy was a lifelong resident of Aiken. His roots here ran deep and, over the decades, helped shape not only his own path but also the agricultural landscape and the many lives he touched. Tommy’s enduring legacy reflects his belief in stewardship, hard work, and the value of deep, faithful ties—to both land and loved ones.

For over two decades, Tommy served with distinction on the Board of Directors of AgSouth, providing essential guidance and leadership that benefited countless farmers and their families. He generously lent his expertise as a board member of Farm Bureau, championing the interests of his fellow agriculturists. His commitment to conservation and sustainable agriculture was further exemplified during his tenure as a commissioner with the Aiken County Soil and Water Conservation District. In recognition of these efforts, Tommy and his family were named the South Carolina Farm Family of the Year in 1975—a testament to their shared dedication and leadership within the agricultural community.

Tommy was a member of St. John’s Methodist Church.

The love and warmth Tommy brought into his home and the lives of those around him continue through his devoted wife, Catherine Sampson Coward. He leaves cherished memories with his daughters: Lynn Workman (Everett), JoJo Crumley (Rob), and Cathy Ann Coward; his grandchildren: Nicholas Willing (Bridgett), Lindsey Watkins (Brandon), Christopher Crumley (Nicole), and Thomas Crumley (Erin); as well as his beloved great-grandchildren, Tucker Crumley, Addie Willing, Aubrey Crumley, and Davis Crumley.

Tommy was preceded in death by his parents, Hazeltine Chaffee Coward and Helen Hayes Coward; his son, Thomas Hayes Coward, Jr.; his brother, Hazeltine C. “Bo” Coward, Jr.; and his sister, Kay Coward Wakefield.

A memorial service to celebrate Tommy’s life will be held at 3:30 PM Monday, August 3, 2026, at the Faith Center at St. John’s Methodist Church. A reception honoring Tommy's life and legacy will follow in Ward Hall at St. John’s.
