STEPHEN JOHN GAVIN, 80, beloved husband of Brenda Osgood Gavin, passed away Wednesday, February 4, 2026 in Piedmont Augusta Hospital after years of bravely battling heart disease. He was born in East Millinocket, ME, the son of the late John and Lillian Powers Gavin.
An exceptional student, Steve graduated as Valedictorian from Garrett Schenck High School in 1964, where he excelled academically and demonstrated his love for baseball. His athletic talents also extended to cross country, as he proudly participated on Emmet Stevens' state championship team.
Steve pursued higher education at the University of Maine in Orono, where he earned both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in chemical engineering. During his time at university, he met his beloved wife, Brenda Osgood, from Lincoln, ME. The two were married in 1972, shortly before Steve's service in the US Army, which stationed them at Edgewood Arsenal in Baltimore, MD.
Following his military service, Steve began a fulfilling career with DuPont in Glassboro, NJ. In 1981, he transferred to the Savannah River Site, where he and Brenda would reside for the next 45 years.
Steve was passionate about baseball throughout his life, dedicating time to youth recreational sports as a Little League umpire. He was a member of Cedar Creek Church.
Surviving is his loving wife of 54 years, Brenda; sister, Mary Liederman of Bingham, ME; niece, Jennifer Cates and her husband Greg, also of Bingham; grandnephew, Austin Cates and his wife, Amy, and great-grandniece, Megan Cates.
A Memorial Service Celebrating the Life of Stephen Gavin will be Thursday afternoon, February 12th at 4 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home with Pastor Phillip Lee officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the American Heart Association (heart.org).
