Rory Murguia

Rory Murguia, 57, passed away peacefully on the evening of July 24, 2025, at her home in Aiken, SC. Born in Carlsbad, CA, she was a daughter of the late Robert Fox and Josephine Mercado Murguia.

A proud member of the Rincon Band of Luiseño Indian Tribe, Rory held a deep appreciation for her Native American heritage. Throughout her life, she pursued her passions with fervor, finding joy in spending time with family and friends, traveling, playing Scrabble, watching movies, cooking, sewing, painting, and sharing delightful stories from her childhood in California. She had a gift for storytelling that captivated all who were lucky enough to hear of her many adventures.

Rory’s love for the beach brought her immense happiness, and weekend getaways and day trips to Hunting Island in Beaufort, SC, were among her favorite pastimes. She embraced life fully, and family always held the utmost importance to her. Rory’s vibrant spirit radiated warmth, and her humor had the power to brighten any room. Her laughter was infectious, and her presence was always felt, creating an aura of joy around her.

A person of remarkable generosity, Rory selflessly devoted herself to ensuring her family and loved ones never wanted for anything. Her creative talents shone through her crafts, from painting to sewing beautiful garments and Hawaiian blankets, each infused with care and love.

Rory found companionship and comfort in her beloved dog, Gelato, who was by her side constantly, embodying their inseparable bond.

Rory will be deeply missed, but her memory will forever remain in the hearts and minds of those who knew her.

She is survived by her loving partner, Daniel Schmalz, and her three daughters, Maya Woolman, Jade Schmalz, and Leah Schmalz, all of Aiken. Additionally, she is survived by her four siblings: Matthew Murguia of Aiken, Joey Murguia of Reno, NV, and Debbie and Michelle Murguia, both of Kauai, HI.

A Celebration of Rory’s Life will take place on Saturday afternoon, August 2nd, beginning at 3 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home.
