Richard Lartigue Garick, Sr.

February 28, 1946 — October 29, 2018

Gilbert, SC - Richard Lartigue Garick Sr. of Gilbert, SC, was born February 28, 1946 in Orangeburg, SC, and went to be with his Lord and Savior in Bethlehem, Palestine while traveling on a pilgrimage trip through the Holy Land on October 29, 2018.  A memorial service with military honors will be held at Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church in Lexington, SC on Monday, November 5th at 3:00 PM.  The Rev. Dr. Jim Glatz will preside over the service, and the Rev. Dr. Barry Jenkins will deliver the message, followed by military honors. A visitation to be held at the church directly after. Richard was the son of Lawrence Taylor Garick Sr. and Helen Catharine Culler Garick of Orangeburg, SC, both predeceased.  While in high school, he lettered in football, basketball, and track and was actively involved in the Boy Scouts of America Troop 45 where he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout.  Upon graduation from Orangeburg High School in 1964, he received an athletic scholarship to Clemson University where he played football from 1964-1969. He earned 3 varsity letters and was a member of the Block C Club and Kappa Delta Chi Fraternity. He graduated in 1969 with a B.S. in Industrial Management, and was then commissioned into the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant while serving a tour of duty in Vietnam from August 1970 through May 1971. Richard was honorably discharged and returned home to Orangeburg where he was the co-owner of his family business, R.L. Culler Refrigeration Service, Inc. until his retirement in 2015. He remained actively involved in his community, including service as President and District Area Representative for the Orangeburg Rotary Club, Commander of American Legion Post 4, and was a member the First Presbyterian Church of Orangeburg where he served as Deacon, Elder, Chairman of the Property Committee, and was member of the John Knox Sunday School class. Upon his retirement, Richard and Tripp moved to Lake Murray where he enjoyed spending time fishing, traveling, attending Clemson football games, and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He was also a member of the Lake Murray Senior Bass Club, the Clemson Friday Morning Breakfast Club, and the Jerome Spires Sunday school class at Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church. Richard is survived by his wife, Louise “Tripp” Garick, son Richard Lartigue Garick Jr. (Jennifer) of Greer, SC, daughter Laura Katherine Garick of Columbia, SC, brother Lawrence T. Garick Jr. (Anne) of Orangeburg, SC and three grandchildren Helen Catharine, Amelia Ruth, and Richard Lartigue Garick III.
