Norman Sublett Myatt

NORMAN SUBLETT MYATT, age 77, born January 30, 1949, in Somerset, Kentucky to Early Alston Myatt, Jr. and Jesse Jean Sublett Myatt, died Wednesday, September 16, 2026, in Aiken South Carolina.

He spent his early childhood in Nashville, Tennessee before moving with his family to Huntington, West Virginia where he graduated from Vinson High School in 1967. At Vinson, he played varsity football, baseball, tennis and basketball – including being a member of the 1966 state championship basketball team. Additionally, he was president of the Honor Society and was honored as Senior of the Year.

In 1971, he graduated from Vanderbilt University with a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Chemical Engineering and was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. He later earned a Master of Liberal Studies degree from Bellarmine University and was a licensed Professional Engineer.

In 1970, Norm married the girl he had dated for 5 years, Betsy Truitt, and they celebrated 56 years of marriage shortly before his death.

Norm spent 15 years as a director of manufacturing with BASF, managing chemical plants in California, New Jersey, Kentucky, Indiana, and Michigan before pursuing other business ventures.

His final career was his favorite. He taught chemistry and robotics at St. Joseph Regional High School in Montvale, New Jersey for 11 years where he led the robotics club in competitions. For several summers he volunteered at the Marist Brothers Center at Esopus at their camp for children with disabilities.

After leaving West Virginia in 1987, Norm and his family lived in Louisville, Kentucky, New York City, and lived in Mountain Lakes, New Jersey for 27 years before moving to Aiken, South Carolina in 2024.

Norm was an avid reader and lifelong learner. He was also a music lover who had maintained a large collection of music and enjoyed live performances of music and theater, especially in New York City. He was an expert fly fisherman and was a founding member of the Gray Fox Variant Sporting Society. He spent time fishing in Montana, Arizona, Colorado, New York, Tennessee, Oregon, and New Mexico. After retirement, you would most likely find Norm with a tennis racket or book in his hands.

In Aiken, he was a member of St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church. Previously, he was a long-standing member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Mountain Lakes, NJ where he served in numerous leadership positions including Sr. Warden.

Norm is survived by his wife, Betsy, his son Ashley Truitt Myatt and daughter-in-law, Brooke of Lynchburg, Virginia and his beloved grandchildren, Robert Field Myatt and Alston Weaver Myatt.

Norm was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Early A. Myatt III and Leslie Crockett Myatt. Memorial donations may be made to: St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Breakthrough T1D (formerly JDRF)

His Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2026, at 11:00AM at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 215 Boulevard, Mountain Lakes, NJ 07046
