Myrle Smarr Jett

AIKEN, SC – Mrs. Myrle Smarr Jett, 96, died Friday, February 3, 2023. She was the daughter of the late Albert W. and Grace Goforth Smarr. Mrs. Jett was born on March 18, 1926. Mrs. Jett received her R.N. degree from the Spartanburg General Hospital School of Nursing and her post-graduate degree in Pediatric Nursing from Children’s Hospital and the University of Cincinnati. She lived in Aiken since 1955. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Benjamin Jett of 56 years; brothers, Colonel Albert W. Smarr, Jr. and William “Billy” D. Smarr; sisters, Frances Brown and Margaret McClure. She is survived by her sister, Mary Bankhead of Sharon, SC and her children; daughter, Marsha (Bob) Eccleston of Columbia, SC and sons David (Jill) Jett of Aiken, SC and Ben (Lisa) Jett of Lexington, SC; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was a very active member of St. John’s United Methodist Church and served most of her 55 years there as a Sunday School teacher. Mrs. Jett served as room mother, den mother and Girl Scout leader. She was a volunteer at ACTS for 25 years. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to ACTS, 340 Park Ave., SW Aiken, SC 29801 or St. John’s United Methodist Church, PO Box 809, Aiken, SC 29801. A memorial service will be held 12:00 PM Saturday, February 11, 2023 at St. John’s United Methodist Church, 104 Newberry St., NW Aiken, SC 29801. The family will receive friends following the service in Ward Hall. Interment will be private.
