Michael Edward Blackwood

July 24, 1958 — June 10, 2022

AIKEN, SC - Michael (Mike) Blackwood 63, passed away unexpectedly Friday, June 10, 2022 at his residence.

While coming from humble beginnings, Mike lived a remarkable life. He was raised in foster care in Alabama, Texas, and Tennessee attending almost a dozen High Schools in the process. He aspired to play football for the Alabama Crimson Tide after graduation and fought his way on to the team as a walk on. During this time, he was inspired by legendary Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant, but perhaps his most important mentor was Coach Mal Moore. Mike would tell you that as a walk on he practiced more than he played but he proudly was part of the 1978 and 1979 National Championship teams.

After college Mike entered the United States Marine Corps for more than two decades until he retired at the rank of Major.

After retirement, Mike lived in various locations working in the Government Contracting sector. He was most recently employed by Savannah River Nuclear Solutions in Aiken, SC. During his life as a team member, Marine, and fellow employee Mike was a colorful, energetic, friend and colleague who had amazing experiences to share with all.

Mike’s wishes were for a simple cremation and to have his ashes spread across the football field at Bryant Denny Stadium at the University of Alabama.

Mike’s life will be celebrated Saturday evening, July 23rd beginning at 6 o'clock with Military Honors at Woods Market, 7000 Woodside Executive Ct., Aiken, SC

Mike often wrote of “characters with character” in his books and on his website. Mike Blackwood was truly a character with character and will be missed by all.
