Mary Ellen Peterson, a dedicated educator and U.S. Army veteran, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2026, at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia. Born on October 15, 1963, in Leesville, Louisiana, Mary Ellen was one of six children born to Goerge Riley and Velma Louise Thompson Hillman.

Mary Ellen's academic journey began at Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana, where she earned her undergraduate degree. She furthered her education by attaining a master’s degree from Eastern Washington University, preparing her for a lifelong career in education.

Her service to country was a proud and defining chapter in her life. As a veteran of the United States Army, Mary Ellen not only served with honor but also found love, meeting her husband of 35 years, Richard A. Peterson, during her military tenure. Together, they built a life rich in shared experiences and unwavering partnership.

After her years in the military, Mary Ellen and Richard resided in Spokane, Washington for three decades. She devoted many years to teaching elementary school children within the East Valley Washington School District, ultimately concluding her career on the staff of Kellogg Idaho School District. Her impact as an educator was felt by countless students and colleagues alike.

In 2020, they retired to Aiken, South Carolina, where she embraced her interests in adult coloring at the public library and gardening—hobbies that brought her joy and tranquility.

Mary Ellen is survived by her beloved husband, Richard A. Peterson; her sisters Connie Snipes (Donnie) and Patsy Pearl Hillman; her twin brother Mark Riley Hillman (Hanae); her brother Gregory Hillman (Shonda); as well as her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Karen Bengtson, Daniel Louis Peterson (Debra), and Julie Martz (Dean).

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Velma Hillman; her brother Mike George Hillman; and her siblings-in-law Jack Peterson and Margaret Ann Peterson.

A graveside service will be held on Thursday morning, April 23, 2026, at 11 o'clock in Ft. Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Percival Rd, Columbia, South Carolina, 29229.
