Mary Susan Hannigan, age 78, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, at Wellstar MCG Health Medical Center in Augusta, Georgia, surrounded by her loving family after a sudden illness.
Born in Lake City, Florida, Mary grew up in Macclenny, Florida. She shared 44 years of marriage with the late William James Hannigan. For half a century, she called Liberty County, Georgia her home. She worked as a secretary for the Department of Defense. She was a long-standing, devoted member of Hinesville First United Methodist Church. In October 2024, Mary relocated to Aiken, South Carolina, to be closer to her family.
Mary will be fondly remembered for her loving and kind nature, her joyful spirit, and her special gift for bringing laughter to those around her. Above all, she treasured her roles as a mother and grandmother.
Survivors include her daughter, Suzanne Abbott (Grason), Aiken, SC; her son, Bill Hannigan (April), Calhoun, GA; eight grandchildren, Daniel Pilon (Brynna), Nicole Hartley (Colton), Brandon Abbott, Jeromy Abbott (Jaselyn), Emily Havens (Derek), Joy James (Zach), Ember Hannigan, Nathan Hannigan; eight great-grandchildren and a sister, Jane Nagle Tucker, Moultrie, GA. In addition to her husband and parents, Mary was preceded in death by her brother, William B. Nagle, Jr.
Family and friends will gather Friday, March 20th beginning at noon at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 1 o’clock with The Rev. Bill Howard III officiating. Private interment will be in Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Glennville, GA.
