Mark "Stein" Hertenstein, a lifelong resident of the San Diego area before moving to Aiken 4 years ago, passed away unexpectedly at his home on April 30, 2026. Born on April 18, 1957, in Imperial Beach, California, Mark grew up in Imperial Beach and graduated from Mar Vista High School.
Mark devoted his professional life to working as a heavy equipment operator in the construction industry, a role that suited his hardworking nature and hands-on spirit. Those who knew him well appreciated not only his dedication to his craft. He was known for his genuine love for the outdoors, including golf, fishing and hunting. Mark found solace and joy in nature’s embrace.
Beyond his professional and recreational pursuits, Mark was celebrated for his storytelling, a gift that brought warmth and laughter to many gatherings. His garage was a well-known hub in his neighborhood, a place where friends and family alike felt welcomed under the unspoken rule: when the garage was open, everyone was invited, and when it was closed, it was time to move along.
Mark shared a profound and enduring partnership with Christina Lesner Hertenstein, with whom he was together for 34 years and married for 30. Together, they have 2 sons: Mark Hertenstein, Jr., and his wife Rachel, who reside in Alabama, and Michael Lesner and his wife Jennifer, of Augusta, GA. Mark was a proud grandfather to five grandchildren—Daymein, Gunner, and Benji Hertenstein, as well as Gwyneth and Degen Lesner.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Leslie Chapman Hertenstein.
A Celebration of Mark’s Life will be held Sunday, May 10th beginning at noon at his home, providing an opportunity for family, friends, and all who were touched by his presence to gather, remember, and celebrate a life well-lived.
