Margaret E. “Peggy” Hinds passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2026 in Aiken, SC.

Born at Shore Road Hospital in Brooklyn, NY, Peggy graduated High School as a member of the Honor Society in Selden, NY, and attended the State University of New York Stony Brook before traveling throughout the west, managing several branch offices of World Savings and Loan, all while starting a family, having lived in Idaho, Colorado, and Vista, CA before moving to Aiken, SC in 1990.

Graduating the University of South Carolina Aiken as a Business Student of the Year, she went on to the University of South Carolina School of Law. After passing the Bar Exam, she served society as a deputy Public Defender in Orangeburg, SC for almost three decades, equally devoted to her family and social justice in the community. A mother figure to all who made her co-workers feel like family, with unwavering loyalty and dedication to her clients.

Under a quiet demeanor hid a delightfully subversive wit, often accompanied by an eye roll that could clear a room, though she’d always lend an ear without judgement for anyone in her orbit.

Remembered also for her exceptional cooking of nearly any cuisine, she’d quicker choose a Diet Coke and a Bacon Double Cheeseburger for herself, though mustard was cause for murder.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward Tracy, of Centereach, NY; Margaret Tracy, Aiken, SC; and a brother Ed Tracy of Connecticut. She is survived by her brother Kevin Tracy of Southington, CT, his children Sean and Amanda; her children, Christopher Hinds, Charleston, SC; Tracy Hinds, New York, NY; and Robin Hinds, Aiken, SC; her grandchildren Natalie, Avery, and Ellis, and her cousins Barbara and Michael Shea, in addition to extended family.

Any donations in her memory are kindly requested to be directed to the Southern Poverty Law Center in an effort to help continue her life’s work.
