It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mamie Lou Washington Mack, 77, on December 27, 2025 at Aiken, SC. She was born on January 22, 1948 in Aiken, SC to William Washington Sr. (Aiken, SC) and Lily Mae Born (Queens, NY).
Mamie Lou was the first woman to work for the city of Aiken as a Sanitation Truck Driver, where she later retired. She then worked in Maintenance for the Highway Department and Aiken Regional Housekeeping. Of all her jobs, Mamie Lou enjoyed working at St. John’s Methodist Church and for the Garnett and Rue families, most of all.
She was known for her kindness, generosity, and sense of humor. Her family and friends will forever remember her for her love of gardening, her favorite saying “I’m Bubba Washington’s daughter”, her unwavering support for her community, and her dedication to her entire family.
Mamie Lou is survived by her sister: Patricia Coot, Queens, NY; her five children: Emily Laguerre Bennett, Queens, NY; Willie Edward Franklin, Aiken, SC; Rodney Cal Franklin, Aiken, SC; Steven Frank Franklin, Manassas, VA; Stacey Regina Washington, Manassas, VA; 15 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings: Rosemary Washington, Mozell Washington, Matilda Frazier, and Albert Washington; and her son, James William Washington.
A celebration of Mamie Lou’s life will be held on Saturday, January 3, 2026 at 11AM, at St. John’s Methodist Church, Aiken, SC. Friends and family are also invited to join us in honoring her life, at a wake on Friday, January 2, 2026, between 2P-4P, at Shellhouse Funeral Home, 924 Hayne Avenue, Aiken, SC.
