Faye Lorenz Smith Woodward passed away peacefully at the age of 98 on September 19, 2026. Born on September 8, 1928, in Kitchings Mill, South Carolina, Lorenz was the daughter of the late Rev. Kemper Delette Smith and Georgia Johnson Smith.
Lorenz was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose life was deeply rooted in love and family. She is survived by her three children: Steven Plunkett Woodward (Jayne), Mary Victoria Hardt (Robert) and Timothy Earl Woodward (Carla); five grandchildren: Chad August Hardt (Alecia), Steven Brad Woodward (Kristy), Todd Garrett Woodward (Kim), Timothy Hudson Woodward and Brooklynn Sarah Woodward; and five great-grandchildren, William Hardt, Macy Hardt, Ava Caroline Woodward, Emmy Kate Woodward, Alexander Mills Woodward, Lilly Margaret O’Leary, Eleanor Claire O’Leary and Bradley Costello O’Leary.
A 1948 graduate of Aiken High School, she was a nurturing homemaker until her husband's retirement. She then enjoyed a career at Dillard's for several years. She had a love for dancing and continued to dance well into her 90s! Lorenz had an eye for fashion, particularly shoes and handbags, and took pride in her beautiful spring flower gardens, with her zinnias being a point of pride.
Remembered by all for her quick wit and infectious smile, Lorenz had the remarkable ability to make everyone feel at home. Her open-hearted hospitality and generous nature left a lasting impact on everyone she met.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Jack and siblings Mary Bulkley, Hazel Potts, K.D. Smith, Jr., Sara Smith and Francis Patterson. Her spirit and loving presence will be profoundly missed by her family and all who knew her.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 27, 2026 from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Shellhouse Funeral Home, 924 Hayne Ave, Aiken, S.C. 29801. A graveside service will be held on Sunday, September 27, 2026 at 3:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Montmorenci, located at 44 Old Barnwell Rd., Aiken, SC.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Montmorenci First Baptist Church in her memory.
The family extends their deepest gratitude to the staff at Hammond Square in North Augusta and Helping Hands Hospice for their compassionate care during Lorenz’s final days.
Lorenz's legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will remain in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
