Leo Richard Berube

Leo Richard Berube, born December 24, 1955 in Fall River, MA, passed away on August 10, 2026, at Wellstar MCG Health in Augusta, GA. Throughout his seventy years, Leo embodied a life of service, dedication, and deep connection to family and community.

Raised in Plainfield, CT, Leo grew up in a family guided by the values of hard work and love. He was the beloved son of the late Leo Hector Berube and Anita England Berube. Leo was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He is survived by his beloved son and daughter-in-law Chris and Katie Berube, and his cherished grandchildren Wyatt, Colton, and Magnolia Berube, all of Aiken, SC. Leo is also survived by his brother, Ronald Berube; his sister and brother-in-law, Cathy and Kyle Mongeau; and his step-mother, Patricia Fontaine-Berube, all of Plainfield, CT as well as his step-siblings Bruce, Teresa and Scott Fontaine; Gina Pennell, and cherished by his niece and nephews Jessica LeDoux, Chad Berube and Josh Mongeau. 

Leo made Plainfield his home for most of his life, forming lasting friendships and forging his reputation as a trusted leader and mentor before moving to Aiken, SC in June of 2025 to be closer to his son and his family.

Leo’s greatest professional pride was rooted in his forty-five years in the fire service. He served with distinction as the Fire Chief for Plainfield Fire Co. in Plainfield, CT, and later as the Deputy Fire Chief for Mortlake Fire Co. in Brooklyn, CT. His commitment to public safety was unwavering, and he inspired countless firefighters through his courage, guidance, and steadfast devotion to the well-being of his neighbors.

Alongside his career in public service, Leo retired from Deary's Gymnastics Supply in Danielson, CT, bringing integrity and hard work to every role he embraced. He also taught drivers education for AAA in Connecticut, patiently helping young drivers gain confidence and skill on the road.

Leo found joy and camaraderie in his many hobbies. An avid motorcyclist, he relished time spent on the open road with his first responder and law enforcement brothers in Connecticut, forging bonds and making memories that lasted a lifetime. Relocating to Aiken brought him new friendships and joy through his work at the Aiken Golf Club. There, he looked forward to playing rounds with the group fondly known as the "Aiken PGA," sharing stories, laughter, and a love of the game.

Plans for a Celebration of Leo's Life in the coming weeks in Connecticut will be announced.
