LCDR Robert MacKenzie Brown, Sr., USN Ret., a distinguished naval officer and revered pilot, passed away peacefully on April 29, 2026, in Aiken, South Carolina with his wife and sons by his side. Born on July 26, 1941, in New Haven, Connecticut, Bob’s life was marked by devoted service, profound love for family, and an enduring passion for aviation.

Bob's early years were rooted in education and preparation for a life of dedication and leadership. He was a graduate of Hamden High School and received his bachelor’s from Quinnipiac University. His commitment to serving his country took form when he graduated from Officer Candidate School (OCS) and received his Naval Aviator Wings in Pensacola, Florida, in 1967. It was there that he met the love of his life, Christine (Weafer) Brown a Navy nurse, who would become his beloved wife of 59 years. He married Chris in December of 1967 embarking together on a journey filled with military service and family milestones.

His naval career was marked by significant achievements and courageous contributions. He served multiple deployments in the East and West Pacific, specializing in anti-submarine warfare. Among his notable acts was the heroic rescue of two downed pilots in the vast Pacific Ocean—a testament to his skill and determination. As a Lieutenant Commander, one of his fondest memories was sharing a seven-day cruise from Hawaii to San Diego with his two sons aboard the USS Kitty Hawk, a moment that beautifully blended his passions for family and naval duty. After a distinguished tenure, Bob retired from the Navy and set his sights on a new chapter as a commercial pilot.

Bob’s aviation career continued with American Airlines, where he served with distinction until his retirement as Captain in 2001, just months before the tragic events of September 11. He was especially connected to American Airlines Flight 11, a route he flew regularly from Boston to Los Angeles. The harrowing hijacking of this flight on that fateful day, in which the very plane he had last Captained, was now flown into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. These events deeply affected him. Knowing the crew personally, he channeled his expertise and grief into becoming an investigator for the Federal Aviation Administration, contributing to efforts that sought to improve aviation safety and security.  Bob finally finished his “Man in Uniform” career as a volunteer in the San Diego Sheriff’s department in 2015.  Bob simply loved his country, his family, and his friends and wanted to serve and protect.

Family was the cornerstone of Bob’s life. He often spoke proudly of his two sons, Rob and Greg, born in 1969 and 1972 respectively, He valued becoming a father which held dear above all else. Greg, along with his wife Marieelena and three children (Mackenzie, Aidan, & Quinn) reside in Bedminster, New Jersey, while Rob lives in San Diego, California. Bob was also a devoted grandfather and his three grandchildren brought immense joy to his later years. Bob was also known affectionately as “The Dog Whisperer,” he had a special affinity for German Shepherds, reflecting the gentleness and attentiveness he extended to those around him. After living for 35 years in San Diego, Bob and Chris moved to Aiken 11 years ago, where they continued to build cherished memories and wonderful friendships

Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Kathleen Brown. His legacy lives on through his beloved wife Christine, his sons and their families, and all who were fortunate to know him. His life exemplified steadfast dedication—to his country, his career, and most profoundly, his family.
