AIKEN, SC - Joseph E Laycock Sr, 92, of Aiken, SC, formerly of Woodfield, Md. died Sept 30th after a short illness. He resided at the Hills of Cumberland Village in Aiken, SC. He was born March 1, 1925 in Hamilton, Va. to Carroll P. and Mary E. Laycock. He attended Lincoln High School in Lincoln, Va. He served proudly in the US Army during WW 2 and saw action in Luzon and other islands in the Pacific Theater of Operations earning a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Following his military service and marriage to Patsy he farmed for several years in the family farm operation in Loudoun County, Va. In 1956 he moved his family to Montgomery County Md. where he lived for 59 years. He began a long career in turf management at the Summit Hall Turf Farm in Gaithersburg, Md. and then worked in golf course maintenance as an assistant greenskeeper for several popular golf courses in Montgomery County Md. until his retirement. He was an avid Gardner and had a vast knowledge of plants, shrubs and general landscaping. He readily shared his abundant harvest with the local community. Mr. Laycock was a lifelong Methodist and faithful member of Wesley Grove United Methodist Church in Woodfield, Md. He was chosen as man of the year in his church in 2014. He is survived by daughter Judith Harlow, (Wayne), Wake Forest, NC, son Joseph Jr, (Barbara) Aiken, SC, and son Michael, Maryland; granddaughters Gena Noyes, (Dwayne), Jennifer Lindenberg, (Jason), Meribeth Aldridge, (Preston); grandsons Matthew Harlow, (Emily), Evan Harlow, (Jacqueline); great-grandchildren Brittany, Brandon, Orion, Grant, Jacob, Nicholas, Forrest, Kathryn, Eason, Declyn, and great-great- grandchild, Lilliana. He is also survived by a brother Ray Laycock, (Joanne), Winchester, Va. and sister Marie Jones, Glen Burnie, Md. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife of 64 years, Patsy Clark Laycock, daughter Mary Alice, brothers William, John, Robert, and Curtis. A service of remembrance will be held at 11AM at Wesley Grove United Methodist Church located at 23640 Woodfield Rd. Gaithersburg, Md. 20882 on Oct 21, 2017.
