Jean M. Avenius

     With great sadness we announce that Jean Marie Avenius passed away on October 16, 2023.  A visitation will be held from 2 - 4 pm on Thursday, October 26, 2023 at the Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home (715 E. Pine Log Rd.) in Aiken.

     Jean was born in St. Clair, PA on August 11, 1933 to Peter and Helen (Salm) Pacine.  She graduated from St. Clair High School in 1950 and went on to work in the dental clinic at the military base in Indiantown Gap, PA.  It was there she met a handsome young lieutenant from Garden City, NY by the name of James Avenius, and they were married on June 21, 1952.  Their son James Jr. joined the family in 1953, as they settled in Webster, NY.  In retirement, Jean and Jim moved south, first to Myrtle Beach in 1986, then to Aiken in 2000.  Jean and Jim enjoyed 70 wonderful years together until his passing on July 24, 2022.  

     Jean is survived by her son, Jim (Jana) of Clinton Township, MI; beloved grandsons, Kevin (Cora) and Mark (Nadia); and great-grandsons, Xander, Lucas, Felix and Sam.  She is predeceased by her husband, parents, sister Laura Mae Scarbinsky, and infant brother Joseph Pacine.

     The family would like to thank Hitchcock House and Enhabit Hospice for the wonderful care they provided to Jean.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to Golden Harvest Food Bank (goldenharvest.org) or the SPCA - Albrecht Center for Animal Welfare (letlovelive.org)  in memory of Jean.
