Janelle Sloan Heuberger

Janelle Sloan Heuberger, 79, beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and devoted educator, passed away peacefully on June 26, 2026, at Aiken Regional Medical Centers. Born on April 9, 1947, in Milford, Delaware, Janelle lived a full and enriching life, marked by steadfast dedication to her family and her students.

Janelle’s early years were marked by remarkable achievement and enthusiasm. A proud graduate of Georgetown High School, she was known for her school spirit as both a cheerleader and an engaged student. She was an accomplished ballet and tap dancer performing for a number years in the lower Delaware and the local TV station in Salisbury, MD. Jan and her brother Tom were champion sailboat racers winning numerous trophies in the Penguin Class sailboats.

Her adventurous spirit led her to become an AFS Exchange Student to Australia during her junior year. Continuing her education at the University of Delaware, where she again excelled academically and socially. Janelle served as a UD Football cheerleader, was honored as a member of the Homecoming Court.

Janelle answered a calling to teach, dedicating her 35-year career to Cecil County Maryland Public Schools, where she taught math and science. Her passion for her students and her craft was recognized when she was named Teacher of the Year, an honor that reflected both her skill and her compassion in the classroom and actively participated in the Odyssey of the Mind Club. Generations of students benefited not only from her subject expertise but from her encouragement and belief in their potential.

A voracious reader Jan served as assistant librarian for Georgetown Library. Over the years she was an enthusiastic member of various book clubs. Janelle found joy in literature and always encouraged spirited conversation and thoughtful debate. In 2020, she moved to the Dunbarton Oaks neighborhood of Aiken, South Carolina, where she quickly became part of the community, finding new friendships and continuing to pursue her interests.

Janelle was dearly loved by her family. She is survived by her daughters, Tara Heuberger of Aiken, SC and Megan Berge and her husband, Michael of Portland, OR; her adored grandchildren, Tegan Price, Eleanor Berge, Caleb Berge, and Amelia Berge; her brothers, Thomas C. Sloan and his wife Marjorie of Smyrna, DE and James G. Sloan and his wife Norma of Chestertown, MD; sister-in-law BJ Heuberger of Colorado Springs, CO.: nieces Marilyn Magnano of Colgate WI, Amy McDonell of Rockville, MD, Keri Gannon of Steam Boat Springs, CO, Gretchen Purvis of Grainsville, FL. Nephews: Andrew Sloan of Rock Hall, Md, Steve Schlitz of Newark, DE, Jon Schlitz of Portland OR, Matt Schlitz of Kensington, PA , and fourteen grand nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Peter L. Heuberger; her parents William C. and Eleanor F. Sloan.

The unconditional love, unwavering support, and enduring friendship that Janelle offered to all who knew her will be dearly missed but never forgotten. A private memorial service will be held in Lewes, DE on August 9. In leu of flower, donations can be made to the Cecil County Public Library through Friends Foundation Cecil County Public Library or Aiken County Public Library.
