James Maldon "Don" Sprawls, Jr.

AIKEN, SC – James Maldon “Don” Sprawls, Jr., 71, beloved husband of Billie B. Sprawls, passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2026.

Born in Augusta, Georgia, Don was the son of the late James Maldon Sprawls, Sr. and Lucille Sprawls. He was the youngest of four children. His father served as Chief of Police in Aiken, and Don developed a lifelong love for public safety and the Aiken community.

At a young age, Don became an Eagle Scout and a member of the Order of the Arrow. Throughout his life, he worked in various capacities and owned Sprawls Service and Sound in Aiken. He was also very active with Aiken Public Safety, serving many years as Chief of the volunteer firefighters and 10 years as a Driver/Operator for the Fire Division. He was a Mason and a Shriner and was active in supporting the charitable work of both organizations.

Don served as a member of Aiken City Council from 1999 to 2008. He will be remembered especially for his dedication to Aiken Public Safety and his commitment to the citizens of Aiken.

Don and Billie recently celebrated 50 years of marriage. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandpa (Papa Don) and will also be remembered for his love of his black Labrador, Smokey, who passed away just a few weeks ago.

In addition to his wife, Billie, Don is survived by his daughter, Laurie Sheriff of Okatie, SC; and his grandchildren, Andy Sheriff and Emmie Sheriff.

Don was preceded in death by his three sisters, Mary Ann Rogers, Martha Blanco and Sandra Sandberg.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM on Monday, September 21, 2026, at Shellhouse Funeral Home, 924 Hayne Ave., Aiken, SC.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at St. John’s Methodist Church, 104 Newberry St. NW, Aiken, SC 29801. Interment will follow in Bethany Cemetery.
