James Milton "Jim" Smith

October 20, 1943 — March 20, 2023

TRENTON, SC - James Milton Smith passed away at home Monday, March 20, 2023 having lost his battle with cancer. 

Jim was born in Gaffney, S C, but lived most of his young life in Athens, Georgia where he attended high school at Athens High, graduating in 1961 and the University of Georgia where he was a member of the football team and coaching staff.  He then served in the United States Army stationed in Germany.  Most of Jim’s career was spent heading up businesses related to construction, but his passion lay in family activities, establishing his homestead and helping others do the same. He would like to be remembered as a fine example of southern hospitality.  Hosting friends and family in his home was his idea of time best spent.  Jim was an avid gardener and delighted in sharing his vast experience and produce with others.   At his death, Jim was near retirement from his two Tennessee based businesses, Smith Steel and Supply and The Back to the Land Store. He was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Augusta, GA. 

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Pam of Trenton, SC, daughter, Wendy Freeze (Tim) of Leesville, SC, sons, Clay Smith (Jennifer)of Newnan, GA, Jason Smith (Caroline) of Acworth, GA and Justin Smith of New Ellenton, SC. Grandchildren include Jordan, Nathan, Kelsey, Austin, Simon, Joel and Ben Freeze, Caroline, Lillian, Bradley, Jacob and Kamden Smith, 9 great grandchildren, brothers, Owens and Philip Smith and sister, Anne Rhine, nieces and nephews 

He is preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Dora Owens Smith of Athens, GA and brothers Ralph and Robert Smith.
