AIKEN, SC – JACK DeWANE WHITTINGTON. 87, beloved husband of Jo Ann Angel Whittington, passed away suddenly, Saturday, June 18, 2022 in Augusta University Medical Center.
A native of Olcott, WV, Jack was the youngest of twelve children of Mike and Ora Ellen Crawford Whittington. He proudly served his country as a U.S. Marine in the Korean War. He graduated from West Virginia State College and received his master's degree from Marshall University. Jack was a police officer in South Charleston, WV for 22 years. He then worked as the administrator at a work release center for the WV Department of Corrections. He retired from the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals as an adult probation officer. He was a former member and deacon of Cross Lanes Baptist Church, Cross Lanes, WV and Mt. Vernon Baptist Church in Hurricane, WV. Jack and Jo Ann moved to Aiken in 2015. He was a member and former deacon of Millbrook Baptist Church in Aiken.
Survivors, in addition to his wife of 66 years, Jo Ann, include two daughters, Karen Myers (Clyde), Aiken, Melissa Crawford (Eric), Saint Cloud, FL; four grandchildren, Amy Myers and Lauren Still (Derrick) of Aiken, Grant and Emily Crawford, Saint Cloud, FL; two great-grandchildren, Sawyer and Charleigh Jo Still; a sister, Virginia Barnett, Detroit, MI and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers and six sisters.
The family will receive friends Tuesday beginning at Noon at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home. A memorial service will follow at 1 o’clock at the funeral home with The Revs. Bill Howard III and Dr. Stephen Cannon officiating.
