Born in 1943 in Hercules, California, Greg was the son of John and Peg Roberts. After he overcame rheumatic fever as an infant, his family moved from California to Lawrence, Kansas, then to Nashville, Tennessee, before settling in Aiken in 1952 during the construction of the Savannah River Plant.

He excelled in basketball, earning an athletic scholarship to North Carolina State University, where he pledged Sigma Chi. He later completed his undergraduate studies in business at Clemson University and earned his master’s degree from the Wharton School, where his thesis on international trade was recognized for excellence. He remained a steadfast Clemson fan through the good, the bad, and the ugly seasons of play.

In 1970, Greg married Barbara Eckardt, a fifth-grade teacher. Together they built a life rooted in family, raising their children while Greg developed a successful career in the insurance industry. His work took the family from Aiken to Roswell, Georgia; Greensboro, North Carolina; and Longmeadow, Massachusetts.

Greg had a profound spiritual experience in 1984 that changed the course of the rest of his life. He made a commitment to his faith that extended into every facet of who he was. He was a Godly leader for his family, a volunteer leader in his church, a member of the board at the Springfield Rescue Mission, and a pillar of faith to all who knew him. He loved studying theology and sharing the Gospel with nearly everyone he met. He lived to reflect Christ in how he loved and served others.

A lifelong lover of card games, Greg became a Life Master in bridge in his early twenties. This passion helped fund his education and later took him around the world, teaching bridge aboard cruise ships and traveling extensively.

Greg eventually returned to Aiken, where he enjoyed his later years surrounded by family, friends, and the game he loved. He was also a beloved financial columnist for the Aiken Standard for more than 10 years, contributing a weekly segment called On the Money.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, John Roberts, and his son, Sean Roberts (Nancy). Greg is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara; his brother Mark (Catherine) Roberts; his sister Rebecca (Gene) McCarthy; his children, Paige (Kevin) Romanowski and Bryan (Amanda) Roberts; and his granddaughters, Grace and Lucy Roberts.

A gathering to celebrate Greg's life will be held from 4:00-7:00 PM Friday, May 1, 2026, at his residence. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, May 2, 2026, in Bethany Cemetery.
