George Matthews Rogers

September 13, 1945 — October 14, 2022

Aiken – Mr. George Matthews Rogers, 77, passed away suddenly Friday, October 14, 2022.

George was born in Bennettsville, SC.  He was the son of the late Robert Southerland and Willie Stubbs Rogers.  George was involved in the education profession since 1969.  His first teaching job was in Clio, SC as a teacher and a coach.  Later he became a coordinator for federal programs in the Marlboro County School District Office.  

Beginning in the Fall of 1983, George continued his educational career endeavors by becoming a teacher within the Aiken County School System.  He eventually rose to become a middle school principal, before finally landing his dream job as principal of Kennedy Middle School.  He maintained this position for 22 years, before finally retiring in 2006.  There he met numerous colleagues, with whom he developed a friendship of many years.  He valued their professional knowledge and always said he had the best faculty in Aiken County.  After his retirement, George and his wife Betsy began traveling across the globe, eventually visiting more than 50 countries.  

He is survived by his beloved wife, Helen S. “Betsy” Rogers; son, George Matthews “Matt” (Dorine) Rogers, Jr., Greensboro, NC; daughter, Lisa Courtney (Mike) Rogers-Davis, El Paso, TX; granddaughter, Jocelyn Courtenay Davis; and a sister, Martha Rogers Edwards, Charlotte, NC.

Funeral services were held privately.
