George Charles Halfmann

September 28, 1935 — May 26, 2023

Aiken – Mr. George Charles Halfmann, 87, passed away Friday, May 26, 2023.

George was born in Bloomington, IL, son of the late George Alexius Halfmann and Elizabeth Ridge Halfmann.

George was an all-round athlete in his high school and college years–pitching on his baseball teams showcased his athletic abilities. After attending DePauw University in Greencastle, IN, he moved to Northern Virginia where he served in the Air Force at the Pentagon. At the conclusion of his service, George was hired by IBM in their Federal Systems Division as a systems analyst. He dedicated his career to IBM, retiring after 35 years.

George met his wife Mary while he was at DePauw. They raised their three children in Northern Virginia, supporting their academics, athletics, and artistic passions.

George and Mary retired to Aiken in 1997; they read about the lovely city in an AARP magazine and knew that was where they wanted to live out their twilight years. St. John’s United Methodist Church became their foundation. George was an active member there as well as a member of the Asbury Sunday School Class. In his community connections, he was a member of the senior men’s group 50 Plus. He also maintained close ties with his Bloomington friends and Sigma Chi brothers from DePauw. George did not know a stranger; he made friends wherever he went.

George is survived by his daughters, Debra (Steve) Nelson, Bloomfield, IL, Mary Lynne Halfmann (Mark), Noblesville, IN; his son, Charles Halfmann, Aiken; grandchildren, Sarah, Grace, Meghan, Thomas, Mary Elise, Jordan, and Braeden; and great grandchildren, Declan and Gareth; and his beloved dog Baley.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Morgan Halfmann.

A Celebration of Life for George will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 23, 2023, at St. Johns United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. John’s United Methodist Church.
