Aiken, SC

Aiken – Mrs. Frieda Linyard Walker, 89, passed away peacefully at home Saturday, August 19, 2023 in the presence of her family after a long illness.

Mrs. Walker was born in North Augusta, SC, the daughter of the late David Parmenio and Frieda Goldsmith Linyard, and was a lifelong resident of Aiken County. Mrs. Walker is survived by her husband of over 71 years, Mackie J. Walker, Sr.; sons: Mackie J. Walker, Jr., Aiken; Jonathan E. Walker (Linda), Aiken; Joseph D. Walker (Missie), Columbia; and Jeffrey L. Walker, (Ellen), Easley; her grandchildren: Mackie J. Walker, III, Erin Bigham, Sara Beech, Elijah Walker, Jake Walker, Mae Walker, David Walker, Marshall Walker, and Charlotte Walker; eight great grandchildren; and a brother, Henry H. Linyard of Zephyr Hills, FL. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, David P. Linyard, Jr., and Samuel G. Linyard.

Frieda’s professional career was remarkable especially for her time. She worked constantly to improve herself and to make a better life for her family. From working at Seminole mill in the early 60s to serving as a teller at Farmers and Merchants Bank after moving to Aiken in 1968, Frieda held positions of increasing responsibility at Aiken Technical College to Lower Savanah Council of Governments culminating with the role of Finance Director for Aiken County. While serving as the Finance Director for the County for over ten years, Frieda worked directly with several county administrators and helped usher in the computer age to Aiken County government. Frieda retired from public service in 1996 after serving as the Finance Director for Aiken County Public Service Authority for five years.

Frieda had a keen mind, a sharp wit and loved being with people. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority for over 52 years. Frieda loved to dance, sew, swim, and play cards (especially Canasta). During the unrest in the 1960’s she helped to promote racial harmony in the Horse Creek Valley. “Mow”, as she was affectionately known by her grandchildren and others, loved her family and was blessed to have a role in all of their lives.
