Frederick F. Riel, known fondly as Buddy, passed away peacefully at his home in Aiken, South Carolina, Monday, April 20, 2026. Born on October 7, 1934, in Montague, Massachusetts, Fred lived a life marked by dedication, love, and service.
Fred was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, who cherished his family. He shared 69 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Nancy Ann Riel. Together, they created a warm and nurturing home where love and kindness flourished. Fred’s commitment to his family was the foundation of his life, earning him the affectionate title of "Grampy" among his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A proud communicant of St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, Fred’s faith was a central pillar throughout his life. He grew up in Turners Falls, Massachusetts, and served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy. Following his military service, he embarked on a distinguished career for 37 years at General Electric, prior to retiring.
Remembered by his family as the best "Mr. Fix-it," Fred took great joy in working in his yard and around his home. He was a man of great resourcefulness and kindness.
Fred’s family remembers him as a devoted, loving presence—a source of strength and encouragement. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Nancy Ann Podlenski Riel; his daughter Joanne Riel Smith (Randy) of Aiken, SC; his son Bruce Francis Riel (Karen) of Canton, GA; his grandchildren Caroline S. Redd (Timothy), Catherine S. Lucas (Kevin), Matthew R. Smith (Harleigh), Margaret Riel O'Grady (Jimmy), and Andrew Francis Riel (Grace). Fred also takes pride in his great-grandchildren Sailey, Sullivan, Emerson, Carlin, Harper, Palmer, Turner, Avery and Bridgette. He is also survived by his brother Douglas Riel.
Fred was preceded in death by his devoted parents, George and Edith Williams Riel, and his brother George E. Riel, Jr.
A Requiem Mass will be Celebrated Friday, May 1, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Old St. Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church, 125 Park Ave SW, Aiken, SC. The inurnment will follow on at St. Mary Help of Christians Columbarium, located at 138 Fairfield St SE, Aiken, SC.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Aiken County Habitat for Humanity (www.habitataiken.org).
