Mrs. Evelyn Buckner Bland, 96, passed away peacefully in her sleep early Friday, October 25, 2024. She was at home at the time of her passing. She was a member of Millbrook Baptist Church for over 60 years and a member of The Sunshine Ladies Club. She enjoyed her fellowship with them up to the time of her passing. She loved a good laugh and was very quick witted. She will be greatly missed.
Evelyn was born in Starr, SC, daughter of the late Henry O. and Docia Wooten Buckner. She worked for E.I. DuPont at the Savannah River Site (corporate payroll) for over 25 years. She enjoyed sitting on her patio admiring her flowers, watching the birds, squirrels, golfers and the occasional deer. She loved a good game of cards (Hand and Foot) and was known to add a few new rules on occasion, especially when the game was not going her way. She worked the local paper’s cross word puzzle most every day. Later in life, she enjoyed working jigsaw puzzles and was always appreciative when neighbors and friends stopped in to help her work on them. She was known to have multiple puzzles going at any given time.
Evelyn is survived by her sons Steve (Marshall Stephen) Bland (Juliet) Houston, Texas, Wallis C. Bland, Jr (Cathy) of Aiken, S.C., granddaughters Carson Ruth Banks (Josh) Hilton Head, S.C. and Natalie Grace Bland of Louisville, Kentucky. Her granddaughters were the apples of her eye and she loved going to their volleyball games and traveled all around the southeast to see them. The teams enjoyed copious quantities of her famous pimento cheese sandwiches (the recipe which departed with her). In addition to her two granddaughters, she is also survived by her sister-in-law Pat Buckner (Anderson, S.C.) nephews, nieces, great nieces and great nephews (spouses).
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Wallis Cone Bland, Sr., sisters, Dorothy Brown, Mary Rupar, Barbara Peck and brother, Henry O. “Butch” Buckner, Jr.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff of Professional Case Management (PCM) and Gentiva Hospice. The loving care each of her CNA Professionals provided was a true blessing and greatly appreciated. Evelyn was lucky to have developed deep friendships with each of these professionals. There is a special place in heaven reserved for Tia O’Brien, Yvonne Odom, Juanita Seawright, Brenda Stroman, Ina Taylor, Kiki Huggins, Dustie Morris, Crystal Butler, Cheryl Lynn Broadwater, Amanda Whisnant, Margie Young-Henderson, Era Jameson and Laura Whisnant. As their final act of kindness, these ladies will serve as Honorary Pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 - 11:00 AM Monday, November 4, 2024, at Millbrook Baptist Church with the funeral service following at 11:00 AM with the Reverend Bill Howard, III officiating. Interment will follow in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Active pallbearers will be Josh James Banks (Hilton Head, S.C.), Blair Allan Hodges (Aiken, S.C.), Kevin Parker Glidewell (Atlanta, Ga.), and Bruce Bland (Edgefield, S.C.).
