AIKEN, SC - Beth Skinner (née Elizabeth Joyce Honea), age 93, transitioned to her eternal home on Sunday, January 4, 2026.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Monday, January 12, 2026, at Aiken’s First Baptist Church with the family receiving friends in the church parlor following the service. A private interment will be held in Southlawn Cemetery prior to her memorial.
Beth was born at home on Sunday, November 6, 1932, in Athens, Georgia, the third child of Daisy Agnes Watson Honea and Frank Godfrey Honea. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 64 years, Albert Jackson Skinner; brother Frank Godfrey Honea Jr.; and sister Lottie Jane Honea. She graduated from Athens High School in 1949. She received her BA degree from Tift College in Forsyth, Georgia in 1953.
Having started piano lessons at six years of age, she went on to major in piano with a minor in Christian Education. She also studied organ and voice. While in college she sang with the College Choir Ensemble and assisted in student revivals as pianist and in a trio. Church music was always a major part of her life. She started playing for Sunday School at the age of eight. She had the privilege of serving as organist at churches in Georgia. When she and her husband Albert moved with their young family to Aiken, she answered an ad on the radio for a pianist at a small Methodist church and began her service in Aiken. Later, she served as church organist at First Baptist Church and at South Aiken Presbyterian Church. In her retirement years, she continued to play regularly for weddings & funerals and substitute when needed at other churches.
In 1960, Beth began a career as kindergarten teacher. She served as teacher and director of First Baptist Kindergarten from 1968 to 1980. She was a member and past president of the Suburban Garden Club. She and Albert attended the USCA Wellness Center for 20 years. Upon her husband's retirement, she spent time enjoying grandchildren and as well as helping Albert with his genealogical work, publishing his family history book, and writing his personal autobiography.
Beth was proud of her offspring and their accomplishments including her children: Dr. Steven (Cynthia) Skinner, of Greenwood, SC; Karen Skinner Lamonds, of Darlington, SC; David (Alexandria) Skinner, of Columbia, SC; Amelia Anne Skinner, of Centerville, GA; and James “Jimbo” Skinner, of Aiken, SC; grandchildren, Joshua (Mary Kate) Skinner, Cassandra (José Rodríguez) Rodríguez Skinner, Benjamin (Lauren) Skinner, Sarah (Christopher Nelson) Skinner, Clarissa (Adriaan de Bruijn) Skinner, Alec Casper (Julia) Skinner, Laura (Doug) Camus, and Glenn Lamonds; great-grandchildren, Mary Margaret Skinner, Rosemary Dula Skinner, Gabriella Rose Rodríguez Skinner, Logan Albert Rodríguez Skinner, Elena Elizabeth Rodríguez Skinner, Steven Quinn Skinner, a great-granddaughter expected in March, Riker Reed Camus, Darci Elizabeth Camus, Ashe Raphael Elizabeth Nelson, Freya Alexandra Skinner Nelson, and Charles David Skinner de Bruijn. Beth was also survived by brother Robert (Alice) Ben Honea, PhD, and sisters-in-law Eloise Skinner Nash and Sarah Elizabeth Garner Skinner.
