Aiken, SC

Elaine Margaret Kalis Schmidt ,Age 92, of Aiken, passed away peacefully at home on October 22, 2025, in the presence of loved ones.

A beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, she had a heart full of love and faith that touched everyone she met.

Born on January 31, 1933, in Chicago, Elaine was a daughter of the late Otto and Meta Kikolai Kalis. She moved to Aiken with her husband, Rudy. and children, Lora and Marty, in 1964.

Elaine loved to travel and had love for the theater, both on stage and off. Her skills went beyond the stage as she served as president for the Aiken community theater and on the Board of Directors for many years.

She was the embodiment of kindness and strength.

Known for her warm hugs and unwavering support, she cherished every moment spent with her family. Whether it was preparing Sunday dinners filled with laughter or helping with the grandchildren's school projects, or great grandsons homework, Elaine always made her loved ones feel special and valued. She often reminded us that family is a gift from God, which she cherished deeply.

Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. As a devoted member of St Paul Lutheran Church, she found joy in serving her community and spreading positivity.

Elaine was a source of strength and comfort during challenging times. Her wisdom and grace taught us lessons in resilience and compassion. She had a unique ability to find joy in life and inspire those around her to do the same. Those who knew her will remember not only her infectious laughter but also her unwavering belief in the goodness of people and the power of love.

The family would like to express their appreciation and thanks to Gentiva hospice and would like to recognize Brittany Bearden, Laketra Wigfall-Minick and Dameshia Josephfor their love, support and care during her last few months.

Survived by her children, Lora Schmidt Ullery and her husband Jim, along with Martin Schmidt and his partner Jennifer Mullins, she took great joy in her role as a grandmother to Katelyn Rhinehart Padgett and her husband Jamie. She also embraced her bonus grandchildren, Jason Ullery and his partner Monica Early, and Joye Moore with Matty, all of whom brought her immense happiness.  Her heart was further filled with love for her great grandsons, Braxtyn, Jameson, and Kannon Padgett, who brought laughter and joy into her life.

Throughout her journey, she valued the bonds of friendship, particularly with dear friends Charlotte Kelly and Kiki, whose companionship added warmth to her days.

A celebration of life is being planned on the anniversary of her 93rd birthday, January 31, 2026 at St Paul Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to THE SPCA ALBRECHT CENTER FOR ANIMAL WELFARE - a cause that was dear to her heart.

Though her physical presence is no longer with us, her spirit will continue to guide us. We will hold her in our hearts forever, grateful for the love and faith she instilled in us.
