Dr. Jane McKenzie Powell earned her undergraduate degree from Ohio State University before pursuing her medical degree in psychiatry at the Medical University of South Carolina. Her professional career was marked by distinguished service as a psychiatrist at the VA Medical Clinic in Aiken, where she touched the lives of countless veterans. She held a special place in her heart for her patients at the clinic, demonstrating a rare blend of empathy and expertise. Her commitment to mental health care extended far beyond the clinic walls, manifesting in a lifelong dedication to healing and advocacy.

Jane's journey brought her to Aiken after Hurricane Hugo, relocating with her cherished horses from Charleston, indicating her deep connection to the equestrian world she so loved. Her passion for animals was a hallmark of her life; she was a staunch supporter and major contributor to the local SPCA, as well as the organizations in Greenwood, South Carolina, and the Aiken Equine Rescue. Her efforts helped countless animals find shelter and care, reflecting a compassionate spirit that knew no bounds.

A fierce advocate for children's rights, Dr. Powell was well known in the Charleston area for her dedicated work on behalf of vulnerable youth. Her advocacy extended beyond her medical career, influencing community efforts to protect and nurture children’s welfare and wellbeing.

In her personal life, Jane found love later in life, marrying Clifford D. Powell eight years ago. Their union brought joy amidst life's challenges. Tragically, just six months after their marriage, Dr. Powell was diagnosed with a brain tumor, which resulted in dementia, initiating a lengthy and courageous battle with the illness until her passing.

Her favorite guiding words, "If not you, then who?" encapsulate the ethos by which she lived—a call to responsibility, compassion, and action that inspired all who knew her.

Dr. Powell is survived by her beloved husband, Clifford D. Powell, who stood by her side through both joyous and difficult times. Their partnership remains a testament to enduring love and mutual support.
