Dr. Doris Blersch Hammond, known lovingly as Dori, passed away peacefully on June 7th at the age of 92. Born on January 27, 1933, in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was the beloved daughter of Ernest Blersch and Dorothy Robisch Blersch.
Although Dori was an only child, she was never alone—her lifelong gift for friendship and her deeply social nature meant that she was always surrounded by love, laughter, and community. she cultivated deep, lasting friendships throughout her life. Her warmth, intellect, and unmistakable presence left an impression on everyone she met.
Dori’s academic journey was marked by a deep passion for education and the human spirit. She earned her Ph.D. in Counseling from the University of Georgia in Athens, a master’s degree in Counseling from Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, and a bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Cincinnati.
Throughout her career, Dori wore many hats—each one marked by her dedication and compassion. She taught young children, served as a guidance counselor in elementary schools, worked in a private counseling practice in Aiken, South Carolina, and was an associate professor of psychology. She also directed a gerontology program, always advocating for the well-being of others across their lifespan. A published author, Dori used her voice and knowledge to inspire and guide countless individuals. Her work—whether in a classroom, an office, or a community group—shaped many lives for the better.
Beyond her professional contributions, Dori was passionate about volunteering, particularly with women’s groups, where she found deep purpose and connection. She also loved to swim, sing, play tennis, and gather with friends—always with laughter and love.
Dori was the wife of Theodore Hammond and the proud mother of three daughters: Kim, Darcy, and Lauri. Together, they journeyed across the country, creating memories and adventures that Dori cherished deeply. She and her family made homes across the country, always guided by her resilient spirit
Dori will be remembered for her intelligence, her spirited personality, and her unwavering dedication to family, friends, and the many communities she touched. Her legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
Dori was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ted Hammond, and her daughter Kimberly Hammond-Beyer. She is survived by her daughters Darcy Hammond-Ross and Lauri Hammond, her son-in-law Carl Hammond-Beyer, her granddaughter Kinsey Silvers and Kinsey’s husband Allen Silvers, and two adored great-granddaughters, Lela and Eliza Silvers.
A celebration of Dori’s life will be held at the Outing Club, July 12th at 5:30pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in her memory to the UU fund or the charity of your choosing.
