Dorothy A. Dougherty Tilmon, 89, passed away Thursday, May 21, 2026 in Aiken, SC.
Dorothy was born November 23, 1936, in Hopkinsville, KY, daughter of the late Edward and Eva Simpson Dougherty. She graduated from Hopkinsville High School. After marriage she moved to Prince George, VA and had a fulfilling professional career in Civil Service. She was the Assistant to the Commanding General at Fort Lee, VA for 36 years until retirement. This was a position that required absolute precision, discretion and a high level of professionalism. She truly loved her job and was well respected by her colleagues. Everyone knew you had to go through “Dottie “if you wanted to see the General.
She was a true sports enthusiast. She found joy in traveling cross-country from stadium to stadium to see her son pitch. In addition to being her son’s biggest fan she was part of the Big Blue Nation, if there was a Kentucky basketball game on then nothing was going to stop her from tuning in, she even postponed a scheduled shoulder surgery because the Wildcats were playing.
When she wasn’t traveling she could be found somewhere in the vicinity of water. She loved to fish and never missed an opportunity for the next big bite.
Some of her happiest moments were spent surrounded by her grandchildren. Nothing brought a bigger smile to her face than spending quality time with them when they would come to visit.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Laurie E. Williams, and her brother Edward Dougherty.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Pat (Candi) Tilmon, grandchildren, Cory Williams, Jesi Williams, Nick Williams, and Ryan Tilmon a, great grandson, Roman Williams, and a brother Jimmy Dougherty.
A celebration of life will be held at Southside Church of Christ on Friday June 26, 2026 at 11:00 am (529 Country Club Lane, Hopkinsville, KY 42240).
