Dorothy Joanna DuBose

Dorothy Joanna Ward DuBose, 94, of Aiken, entered into rest on September 19, 2026.

Born and raised in Stamps, Arkansas, Jo was the daughter of the late Glen and Dorothy Stephenson Ward. She married Jack DuBose in 1957, joining the community of military families. Together, they served their country, raised a family, and made homes throughout the United States and Germany.

Throughout her years as an Air Force spouse, Jo lived by her motto, "Bloom where you are planted." She volunteered in her children's schools and shared her musical talents through the base chapel choir. Jack's second career in emergency management later took them to Conway, Arkansas, where Jo worked as a church administrator and continued her lifelong commitment to service through mission and disaster relief organizations.

After retiring in 2002, Jo and Jack took to the backroads of America in search of scenic hiking trails, obscure museums, and the best local diners. In 2012, they moved to Aiken to be closer to family, but their sense of adventure remained. They continued to travel, explore, and make new friends along the way until Jack's passing in 2019.

Jo's final years were spent in quiet reflection on an adventurous life well lived. She found joy in early morning walks, studying her Bible, and spending time with friends and family.

Jo is survived by her children, Jeffery DuBose of Prattville, Alabama, and Jacqueline DuBose (Fred Singer) of North Augusta; her grandson, Chad Singer (Melissa) of South Jordan, Utah; her brother, Leon Ward (Barbara) of Holly Lake Ranch, Texas; and her beloved nieces and nephew, Vickie Lee (Ricky), Warren Ward (Amanda), Donna Mayfield (Steve), and Susan Drop (Tom).

Jo will remain forever in our hearts, and we take comfort in knowing that she is with the Lord.

A celebration of life service will be held September 30th at 11am at the Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home chapel, 715 East Pine Log Road, Aiken, with Dr. Ricky Lee officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Hope for Hooves (hopeforhooves.org) or the CSRA Humane Society (csra-humanesociety.com).
