Dennis Wayne Thomas

Dennis Wayne Thomas, 72, of Aiken, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2026. Born on September 3, 1953, in Staunton, Virginia, he was the son of the late James Raymond and Virginia James Thomas.

A proud veteran, Dennis served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Charles F. Adams and at the Naval Reserve Manpower Center in Bainbridge, Maryland. During his honorable service, he was awarded the Meritorious Unit Commendation and the National Defense Service Medal.

As an engineer, project leader, and mentor, Dennis devoted much of his professional career to solving some of the nation’s most complex engineering and nuclear safety challenges. His work with the Department of Energy, where he earned the respect of colleagues, not simply for his technical expertise, but for his integrity, thoughtful leadership, and willingness to teach others. He believed that good governance, careful planning, and investing in people created lasting success.

Outside of his professional life, he loved spending time with good friends, laughter, and the occasional colorful comments. He cherished classic automobiles, especially his Triumph Spitfire and found satisfaction in bringing vintage machines back to life, one repair at a time. Above all, he cherished time spent on the water. His favorite time of year was taking trips to the Florida coast for deep-sea fishing with his son and grandson, as well as enjoying short fishing getaways with his close friends.

Dennis is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 52 years, Pamela J. Thomas, whom he married on November 1, 1974. He was a devoted father to his children: Jennifer (Grant) of Logandale, NV; Jolie of Canby, OR; Brandi of Aiken, SC; and Mason (Alexandra) of Greenville, SC.

He was the proud grandfather of 10 grandchildren: Tyler (Julie), Jordyn (Matthew), Jordan (Eddie), Brandon (Katie), Logan (Jordan), Gannon (Mia), Hunter, Kennedy, Mattison, and Beckham; and great-grandfather of 6 great-grandchildren: Carter, Grant, Rowan, Holden, August, and Layla.

In addition to his parents, Dennis was preceded in death by his brother, Douglas.

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church Chapel. A reception will follow in the Stevenson-McClelland Building.

Dennis leaves behind a legacy measured not only by projects completed or positions held, but by the lives he touched, the people he encouraged and the examples he set. If he were here today, Dennis would surely remind us all that "Life is a journey, not a destination."
