David Lawrence Sacks, 70, of Aiken, South Carolina, passed away on July 12, 2026. Born July 30, 1955, in Aiken, he was raised there and made it his home for his entire life.

A lifelong entrepreneur, David was best known as the longtime owner of Newberry Hall catering company, which he ran alongside his beloved wife, Maggie. The two purchased the business from Maggie’s brother, David’s brother-in-law and best friend, Sam Erb, and grew it into a cherished part of the Aiken community. When the time came to step away, David took great pride in passing it on to Patrick Carlisle, his first employee, and his wife Natalie. Beyond catering, he found considerable success in real estate, where his instincts and hard work led to many rewarding ventures.

Yet those who knew David best remember him less for business and more for his warmth. He was, above all, a family man. He was a devoted husband, a loving father to three daughters, and a proud grandfather to four. Nothing brought him more joy than cooking and planning meals, a craft he treated as an act of love. He loved the outdoors, particularly hikes in Hitchcock Woods. Handy and endlessly capable, he was a natural partner in Maggie’s woodworking business. Together they built many things and made a wonderful team. Among the many things they built together, was their family home in Aiken, where they lived for nearly 40 years. In their later years, David and Maggie also enjoyed peaceful days at their condo on the Intracoastal Waterway in Miami, Florida.

A man of steadfast faith, David was a devoted member of St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church, and before that, St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church.

David was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret “Maggie” Erb Sacks, whom he married on April 18, 1980. He is survived by his three daughters: Anna Lindsay Tucker and her husband, Bennett Tucker, of Aiken, SC; Catharine Elizabeth Naranjo and her husband, Roger Carlos Naranjo, of North Miami Beach, FL; and Margaret Emily Sacks of Waynesville, NC. He also leaves behind four cherished grandchildren: Nathan Lawrence Tucker, Laurel Bennett Tucker, Roger Christian Naranjo, and Valentina Elizabeth Naranjo.

If he were here today, David would remind us all: “Today is the first day of the rest of your life.”

A memorial service will be held at St. Thaddeus Episcopal Church, followed by a celebration of life at Newberry Hall, 117 Newberry Street SE, Aiken. Additional details will be announced.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Augustine of Canterbury Episcopal Church, 1630 Silver Bluff Road, Aiken, SC 29803, or to the Hitchcock Woods Foundation, P.O. Box 1702, Aiken, SC 29802.
