Danny Eugene Johnson

Danny Eugene Johnson, fondly known as “Rhino” to many, passed away late Thursday, July 9, 2026 at Aiken Regional Medical Centers, following an extended illness.

Born in Augusta, Georgia, on June 18, 1946, Dan spent his formative years growing up in North Augusta. He graduated from Carlisle Military Academy, where he earned the nickname “Rhino” from his football teammates. Dan continued his academic pursuits at Texas A & M Corpus Christi, laying a foundation for a career in retail management.

For 42 years, Dan called Mauldin, South Carolina home. He dedicated 28 years in management to J. C. Penney where he established countless friendships and was highly regarded. Following that chapter, he spent five years with Belk.

Dan was an avid Gamecock fan, cheering on his beloved team every season through thick and thin. He enjoyed golf, hiking, working around the house, and spending time with his family and friends.

Dan’s greatest legacy is his family. He is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Jane Raines Johnson, whose steadfast partnership was the anchor of his life. He leaves behind his sons, Danny A. Johnson and his wife Lexa of Swansea, SC and Eric Johnson and his wife Courtney of Aiken; his adoring grandchildren, Davin Cassidy Johnson, Sarah Grace Johnson, Tyler Davis Johnson, and Brayden Ryan Johnson; and a sister Cheryl Kilpatrick.

He was preceded in death by his parents, David Hugh and Myrtle Louise Anderson Johnson; two brothers, David Hugh Johnson Jr. and Don Larry Johnson; and a sister, Carolyn Diane "Cookie" Jones.

The family plans to celebrate Dan’s life at a later time, ensuring that his story is honored in the company of those he cherished.
