AIKEN, SC – Col. James G. “Jim” Clapp, U.S. Army, Retired, 81, beloved husband of Brigitte Clapp, passed away Thursday, Decemeber 29, 2022. Col. Jim Clapp was born and raised in Minneapolis, MN. After graduating from college and post-graduate programs, he enlisted in the U.S Army in the mid 1960's as a Private, E-1. Thirty years later, he retired from active duty as a Colonel, O-6. Jim's early military assignments included tours in Vietnam and Germany in various infantry and intelligence positions. After his initial tour in Vietnam, he was commissioned a 2LT in the U.S. Army-Infantry. Col. Clapp resigned his commission in the mid-1970s to accept an intelligence position with the U.S Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). After resigning from the DEA, he returned to active military service in the early 1980's. Later career assignments included tours in various current operations, plans, policy, and force projection operations and programs at a Major Army Command (MACOM), Headquarters, Department of the Army (HQDA), and the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD). After retiring from the U.S. Army, Jim worked in the Washington, DC area as a project manager for a defense contractor, as executive director of a nonprofit veteran's organization, and as an advisor on defense and diplomatic issues to the newly established Balkan states. Jim and his wife of 52 years, Brigitte moved to Aiken in 2008. In addition to his wife, Col. Clapp is survived by his daughter, Tanja and husband Scott, who lives in Bolivar, Missouri, with her four children; Bronwyn (Topher) Short, Elliott Dennis, McKenna Stephens, Rowan Stephens and Bronwyn Short’s son, Ollie; and a son, Kevin, who together with his wife, Katie, lives in Charlotte, North Carolina with their son Turner. A Funeral Liturgy will be held on Thursday, January 12, 2023 at 10:00 AM at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following the service.
