AIKEN, SC - Memorial services for Charles W. Thorngate will be held Friday afternoon, July 28th at 1 o’clock at St. John’s United Methodist Church under the care of Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home. A reception will follow in Ward Hall. Mr. Thorngate passed away Sunday, July 9, 2017.      In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. John's United Methodist Church Choir, 104 Newberry Street NW, Aiken, SC 29801.      Born in Janesville, WI to John H. and Dorothy Thorngate and married for 71 years to Betty E. Thorngate. During WWII Charles served as a Captain and Navigator on a B-24 in Italy. Charles attended the University of Wisconsin Madison, graduating with a Masters Degree in Meteorology and Climatology. He was employed his entire career with the Dupont Company at the Savannah River Plant as Meterologist/Climatologist, a Reactor Shift Supervisor, and Production Forecaster.      Mr. Thorngate resided in Aiken since 1952, active in St. John's Methodist Church, VITA income tax program, Aiken Hospital Auxiliary, Military Order of World Wars, Habitat, and SC Society of Engineers. Charles and Betty enjoyed music, traveling, Elder Hostels, and beach and mountain vacations.      Survivors include his loving wife Betty; deceased daughter Christine T. Gottlieb (Samuel) Portland, OR; daughter Dorothy T. Brannon, Aiken; sister Sally T. Wells, East Lansing, MI; brother John Thorngate (Carole) of Livermore, CA; four grandchildren Noah Gottlieb; Adam Gottlieb (Noellia); Matthew Brannon, Aiken; Kathleen B. Benjamin (David) Mt. Pleasant, SC; step-grandchildren Lori B. Thornton (David); Patrick Brannon (Janis); four great-grandchildren Jenna Thornton, Lindsay Thornton, Garrett Thornton and Morgyn Brannon.   SHELLHOUSE – RIVERS FUNERAL HOME, 715 EAST PINE LOG RD., AIKEN, SC To order memorial trees or send flowers to the family in memory of Charles W.
