CHARLES OSCAR SLIGH, 86, beloved husband of Janice Ingle Sligh, was surrounded by his loving family as he entered into eternal rest Friday evening, January 23, 2026, in the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center, Augusta, GA.
Chuck loved God, his country, and his family. He enjoyed travel and, in every season of life, lived with selflessness and a deep appreciation for life’s simple joys. Known for his bright blue eyes and steady presence he was direct, dependable, and deeply loving, always wanting the best for those he cared about.
A native of Norway, SC, Chuck was a son of the late Earl and Grace England Sligh. He was a 1957 graduate of Norway High School, where he played football and was a member of the Beta Club. Following high school, he worked on the family farm for a year before enlisting in the U.S. Army. For the next 21 years Chuck served in posts all over the world. In 1964, he completed a tour of duty during the Vietnam War, where he provided medical care under dangerous conditions as a field surgery medic with the 109th Division. In 1972, he was stationed in South Korea at the 121st Evacuation Hospital near Seoul, where he worked in the Surgical Department, providing critical care to service members far from home. Following the completion of his service in 1979 he moved to Aiken, SC where he continued his career in healthcare working at Aiken Regional Medical Center (ARMC) for 22 years. While at ARMC, Chuck worked in the Centralized Material Section and the Respiratory Therapy Departments. A faithful member of Trinity United Methodist Church for forty-seven years, Chuck contributed his time and leadership to numerous committees, was a trustee, and sang in the choir.
Before his retirement from the Army, Chuck was diagnosed with Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy, a condition he faced with grace, tenacity, and a quiet determination for nearly five decades. His unwavering spirit and resilience were an inspiration to all who knew him.
He leaves to treasure and cherish his memories, his beloved wife of 37 years, Janice; his daughter, Ginger Glass (Doug), Aiken; his son, Jeff Sligh (Denise), Anderson, SC; his first wife and mother of his children, Carolyn Martin, Aiken; eleven grandchildren, Jessica Glass, Taylor Glass (Courtney), Jamie Madden (Colin), Alicia Sligh, Brianna Sligh, Mackenzie Sligh, Haleigh Sligh, Avery Sligh, Chloe Sligh, Olivia Sligh, and Addison Sligh; twelve great-grandchildren; two brothers, Ernest Sligh (Doris), Silver Spring, MD, Walter Sligh, Orangeburg, SC, a sister Rose Nix, Lexington, SC; a sister-in-law, Martha Sligh, Livingston, SC and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Chuck was preceded in death by his twin brother, Arthur Sligh; his sister-in-law, Kitty Sligh and his brother-in-law, Jimmy Nix.
May his memory be a blessing and may we each carry forward the quiet resolve he embodied. May his love continue to guide us, his presence be felt when we need it most, and may we honor him by living with courage, kindness, and love.
The family will receive friends Friday morning, February 6th beginning at 10 o’clock at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home. The funeral service will follow at 11 o’clock with the Rev. Dr. Donnie Bates officiating. Interment will be in Sunset Memory Gardens with full military honors. Pallbearers will be David Gibbons, Gayle Gulick, Mike Hipp, Bob Kelly, Joe Smith and Jerry King.
