Carolyn (Carol) Joan Crowell Winsor passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 30, 2026, in Aiken, South Carolina. Born in Providence, Rhode Island on July 17, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Robert H. Crowell and Dorothy Maud Richards Crowell. Carol was raised in Providence, where she graduated from Hope High School and attended the University of Rhode Island. Carol’s first love was music, studying piano and organ in her teens and early twenties and later singing in various church choirs. She met her future husband, Philip Winsor, at a Rainbow Girls and DeMolay Boys dance at fourteen years old, but it wasn’t until Philip’s last year in college when they recognized an enduring bond and were married on September 10, 1960. The couple eventually settled in Walpole, Massachusetts where Carol was director and officer of her husband’s architectural firm, applying her significant organizational skills to keep all aspects of home and office running well. During their 65 years together, they especially enjoyed spending summers in Lyman, Maine and traveling with friends.
Throughout her life, Carol pursued her dual passions for reading and needle crafts. She loved a book with a happy ending, was an avid knitter, and counted cross stitcher. Carol will be most remembered though for her enduring commitment to community service. She volunteered with numerous organizations in Massachusetts and South Carolina, including Norwood Hospital, Doolittle Home, Walpole Arts Council, the United Church in Walpole, Mended Hearts, Aiken County Museum, and the First Presbyterian Church of Aiken. As past president of the Walpole Chamber of Commerce, Carol was named “Citizen of The Year” by the Chamber and recognized by both the House and Senate of the Massachusetts State Legislature in 2000. During retirement, Carol served as a dedicated volunteer at the Aiken Center for the Arts where she was recognized with a “Volunteer of the Year” award in 2011.
Carolyn is survived by her husband, Philip S. Winsor; son, Andrew (Maryann) of Belize; daughter, Katheryn (Mark) Bohlman of Connecticut; five grandchildren, Chelsey, Mackenzie, Philip, Isabel, and Sarah; and a brother, David (Margaret) Crowell. She was predeceased by siblings Robert Crowell, Richard Crowell, and Judith Bakula.
Services will be private. The family has asked that donations in Carolyn’s name be made to Aiken Center for the Arts or the charity of your choice. The family also extends a heartfelt thank you to the staff at Anchor Acute Care and particularly Gentiva Hospice for their empathy and care.
Final arrangements have been coordinated by SHELLHOUSE FUNERAL HOME, INC., 924 HAYNE AVE., AIKEN, SC
