Bruce Gregory Russell

BRUCE GREGORY RUSSELL, 79, passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2026 in the comfort of his home.

Born in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, Greg was the son of the late Vincent and Helen Dunmire Russell. He was raised in the Philadelphia suburbs and earned an appointment to the U.S. Naval Academy. Though his time there was cut short due to an injury, he went on to complete his studies at the University of Pennsylvania. After college, Greg relocated to Maryland, embarking on a dedicated 30-year career with the U. S. Census Bureau.

Later in life, Greg joyfully reunited with his high school sweetheart, Mary Beth Pettey, at their 50th high school reunion. They married and have shared a loving life together in Aiken for the past ten years.

Greg was an avid sports enthusiast, with a special passion for college football and Navy athletics. He especially enjoyed biking on the Eastern Shore of Maryland and in Aiken County. For more than 20 years he organized an annual fishing trip to Canada with his close friends.

Greg is lovingly survived by his wife, Mary Beth; his sister-in-law, Ellen Russell; his nephew, Brian Russell; and his niece, Lisa Duncan. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Jeffrey Russell, and five cherished dogs.

A memorial service will be held Thursday afternoon, April 9th at 2 o’clock at Shellhouse – Rivers Funeral Home. Private interment will be at the Washington Memorial Chapel Cemetery in Valley Forge, PA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) or the Best Friends Animal Society (bestfriends.org)
