Betty J. Samuel

December 17, 1933 — April 5, 2023

AIKEN, SC – Mrs. Betty J. Samuel, 89, widow of the late Wilbert “Sam” N. Samuel, passed away peacefully Wednesday, April 5, 2023. She was surrounded by her loving family.

Betty was born in Chicago, IL to the late Hugo and Esther Mach Johnson and grew up in Maywood, Illinois, and graduated from Proviso East High School. Betty married "Sam" in 1955 and raised three children who she loved dearly.  Many happy memories were spent camping and enjoying the Florida beaches.   After "Sam's" death in 1977, she loved spending time with her family. She enjoyed entertaining and cocktail hour with friends and loved ones. She loved to work and retired at the age of 83.  Betty loved to shop, loved a good sale, always looked beautiful, and loved her grandchildren dearly. She was looking forward to being a great-great grandmother in May.  There was a special place in her heart for Ed, Tony, Margie, and Joey.  She was proud of the accomplishments of Lisa and Hannah and all that they've achieved. Betty was a loving sister, mother, grandmother and aunt, and she will always be in our hearts.  In Betty’s memory, whenever you see a full moon, think of Mom.  She loved the moon and stars and all of God's creations, and loved to sing - all year long - “Oh, There’s No Place Like Home For The Holidays.”

Survivors include her three children, Patricia “Patsy” A. (Dr. Edward) Callen, Aiken, SC, Suzan A. (Anthony) Gualano, Naperville, IL, Willam “Billy” C. (Margie) Samuel, Bentonville, AR; grandchildren, Lisa M. (Joey) Veronico, Hannah E. Samuel, Jonas Edgmon, Lindsay (Mark) Currie; sister Ruth Gibson, Mesa, AZ, and numerous nieces and a nephew.

In lieu of flowers, memorials made in Betty’s name may be directed to Callen Psychology Research Award Fund at UofSC Aiken, South Carolina.

Betty's family will celebrate her life this summer in Hilton Head, SC
