Anne Dolores Flanagan of Aiken and a former resident of Columbus, Ohio and Manlius, New York, died Friday, September 13, 2024.
Born July 26,1949, she was the daughter of the late J. Urban Daly and Anne M. McFadden.
Anne was born in Youngstown, Ohio and spent her early years in Latrobe, Pennsylvania before the family relocated to Worthington, Ohio. She was a graduate of The Ohio State University in Columbus, with dual majors of Ancient History and Latin. She earned a Licentiate and Masters Degree at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies at the University of Toronto.
Anne was a talented editor and graphic designer who worked primarily in the field of college-level textbook production. She was employed by major publishing companies before continuing her work in a self-employed capacity. She had a keen interest in language learning and studied German, Irish Gaelic, Italian and Spanish. As an adult she learned Irish step dancing and was very active in the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Gaelic League. She was a gifted writer of beautiful prose, as all who received a letter or even an e-mail from her will attest. Her taste in music was eclectic and ranged from grand opera to Icelandic Christmas carols. Her books were her good friends, many read and reread many times over. Her vast library covered almost any topic.
After relocating to Aiken in retirement, Anne became involved in her parish, the Aiken Newcomers Club, the Material Girls sewing group and Woodside wine groups. She was always full of ideas for fun activities and organized and hosted an annual party for the Palio di Siena horse race, Lenten Soup dinners, an Olympics for non-athletes and most of all her Off-key Kitchen Table Singing Society. Travels took Anne and Pat to Ireland, Great Britain and many countries in continental Europe, In keeping with her educational background, Anne savored her travels to Italy, Greece and most recently, Sicily. A walking pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago in Spain was a cherished religious and spiritual experience for both Anne and Pat.
Surviving are her loving husband, F. Patrick Flanagan, sons Michael Bowers of Morongo Valley, California, Brian Bowers of San Marcos, Texas, Michael Flanagan and his wife Abbie of Glen Arm, Maryland, daughter Molly Flanagan of Columbus, Ohio, and three granddaughters, Fiona, Margaret and June Flanagan. Also surviving are her sister Maureen Danly and brother-in-law James C. Danly of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, brothers James U. Daly of Columbus, Ohio, Brian R. Daly of Grand Junction, Colorado, nephew James P Danly of Murfreesboro, Tennessee and niece Erin Danly Porcu (Gian Paolo) of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
The family will receive friends at Shellhouse Funeral Home, 924 Hayne Avenue in Aiken on Wednesday September 18 from 5-7:00 p.m, where prayers will be offered by Pat’s cousin, Father Lawrence Hummer at 6:45 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday September 18 at 1:00 p.m. at Saint Mary’s Help of Christians (Old Church), 125 Park Avenue SE, Aiken. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
