On Monday, November 13, 2023, Ann Hawes Schultz, our beloved mother and grandmother, passed away at the age of 93 years. She is survived by her children, Karen S. Lamb (Don) and Gary E. Schultz, Jr. (Heather); her grandchildren, Dylan, Maddox, Kennedy, and Ashton; and her brothers, William G. Hawes and Henry C. Hawes (Margaret). She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Gary E. Schultz.
Ann was born in Ocilla, Georgia in 1930. After high school, she received her degree in education at the University of Georgia and had a lengthy career teaching in Georgia, Virginia, and South Carolina. After meeting Gary E. Schultz in Columbus, Georgia, they wed on March 31, 1957. Ann and Gary raised their two children in Virginia and then Aiken, South Carolina.
In Aiken, Ann taught at Mead Hall Episcopal School for 20 years. Sweet memories include hearing laughter in the living room from the ladies of the Bridge Club, her love of soap operas, her mother’s German chocolate cake, and trips to McDonalds. Ann made Christmas a wonderful time for the family and filled the house with delicious smells and beautiful decorations.
Ann was quite the birder. She knew all the types of birds that came to her feeders. The bluebirds that nested in her backyard would come to her back door to let her know when it was time for a meal, and hummingbirds would fight over the feeder that was always kept full of nectar.
Ann did not slow down after retirement. She was a talented seamstress and learned to quilt, making special, individualized quilts for her four grandchildren as well as beautiful quilts for other family members. She enjoyed volunteering to help her friends in the kitchen at First Baptist Church of Aiken on Wednesday nights. She and her husband Gary enjoyed traveling in their camping van across the United States as well as touring Europe. However, we think Ann entertained herself the most by tending to their home, especially her flower and rose garden.
A graveside service is being held at Southlawn Cemetery and Mausoleum on Wednesday, November 22 at 11 AM.
Donations in Ann’s memory may be made to ACTS (Area Churches Together Serving) at 340 Park Ave SW Aiken, SC 29801.
