Alice Mary Finch Flanders passed away on August 18, 2025, in Aiken, South Carolina, following a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Mary Finch, and her brother, James Finch.
Born and raised in Connecticut, Alice grew up alongside her brother, James, and sister, Jeanne Finch Strode. She left the family home in 1956 when she married Ensign William M. Flanders, USCG. They were stationed in many places in the US and Germany. Together, they raised four children: Richard (Rebecca), Linda, David (Kara), and Steven. Alice was a loving grandmother to seven grandchildren—Nathan, Sarah, Ian, Alex, Cassandra, Collin, and Alison—and four great-grandchildren.
In 1985, Alice and her family settled at Lake Monticello in Palmyra, VA. She was an active member of her community, serving on the Lake Monticello Buildings and Grounds Committee and as an EMT (Life Member) with the Lake Monticello Rescue Squad. An avid golfer, Alice was a longtime member of the Lake Monticello 18-hole ladies' league. In 2022, she and her husband, Bill, moved to Aiken, SC, to be closer to their family.
Alice is survived by her husband of 69 years, Captain William M. Flanders, USCG/ret.; her sister, Jeanne; her sister-in-law, Doris Finch; her four children and seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A private funeral service for family and friends will be held at David and Kara Flanders’ home on Saturday, August 23, at 11 a.m., with drop-in hours until 2:00 p.m. The service will be held outside, so attire will be informal. Burial will take place at a later date at Fort Jackson National Cemetery in Columbia, SC. In lieu of memorial flowers or trees, donations can be made in Alice's name to Walking Tall Ministries in Gloverville, SC.
