AIKEN, SC - Albert Lewis was born December 28, 1924 in Binghamton, New York, to Oswald and Leila King Lewis, but grew up in Chicago, IL. In 1988 he moved to Aiken, SC, where he passed away on September 24, 2017 at 5:10 AM. He retired after a long career from Gorham Bronze. Al was very proud and loved to talk about his years in the Army Air Corps during World War II. One thing he was proud of was that he joined the VFW and worked his way up to Post Commander and became the first in his post to be elected two consecutive terms. He remained a lifetime member. In 2001, he met Rosemarie Eggenberger and a great friendship and companionship began. This relationship grew stronger and continued until he passed away. Some of Al's favorite pastimes were playing Bingo and Canasta with close friends and attending Wednesday Night Bible class. He was a die-hard Chicago fan and was thrilled to live long enough to see the Chicago Cubs win the World Series. He had a rare warmth of personality that left a lasting impression on all who met him. He will be greatly missed. Survivors include his loving companion, Rosemarie Eggenberger; her son, David Eggenberger (Wendy) and their children; his children, Albert Jr. (Mary), Karen Olsen (the late Kenneth), Jan-Marie McEvilly (Timothy), Don Becker (Carmen), Joy Baez; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Gerda and his second wife, Norma. A memorial service with military honors will be held Saturday, October 7th at 3 o’clock in the afternoon at Trinity United Methodist Church with The Rev. Lee Phillips officiating. The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service beginning at 2 o'clock.
